What Will Matter

Maintaining Humanity in the Face of Inhumanity

“The world will not get safer until it gets softer, yet the more dangerous the world becomes the more fear and prejudice make people harder. The responses to unspeakable violence must not be a demand to do whatever it takes to be safe because there is no real safety in such methods. Somehow we have to learn to live with some risks so we can see and know people as they are – first, without fear, hatred or condemnation and eventually with love. When I find myself despising bigots, unprincipled opportunists and hate mongers I realize I am in the same trap. The challenge is maintaining my humanity while I seek to eradicate the inhumanity of others and to be confidently optimistic when it seems so dark.”
