All wars are planned by old men in ante rooms apart,
Who plan for greater armament and mark the battle chart,
But where their sightless eyes stare out
Beyond Life’s vanished joys,
I notice nearly all the dead are hardly more than boys.

I first came upon this quote while reading the late great Hunter S. Thompson. I have used it in conversations with my children and hopefully they are as moved by it as I was both in the initial reading years ago and presently.

My interpretation is related to the guy upstairs and not just a ball game.
my mom taught me this quote when I was a child. And I taught it to my daughter!
Update for our time:
“For when the One Great Scorer
Comes to mark when you are dead,
He writes not that you won or lost,
But if you beat the spread.”
