OBSERVATION: Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth. – Marian Wright Edelman

Though we  should engage in service to others, charity and active helping because of the joy and self-satisfaction it brings us, Marian Edelman Wright’s insight (often erroneously attributed to Muhammad Ali) tells us there is also a duty to serve. Successful television producer and founder of People for the American Way Norman Lear said, “It seems to me that any full-grown, mature adult would have a desire to be responsible, to help where he can in a world that needs so very much, that threatens us so very much.”

Remember, you don’t have to be a full time missionary or social activist to serve. Just do something to make the world a little better.

  1. Hi there,
I love the quote, and the sentiment behind it. However, Marian’s quote is “service is the rent we pay for being…”. The quote you listed above is directly attributable to Muhammad Ali. Granted, they are the same sentiment, and Marian communicated that sentiment first. However, I can’t find any evidence that Marian said “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth” first, and there is ample evidence that Muhammad Ali said it.

  2. My considerable research results predate by decades, dates and source attribution of the quote ” Service to others is the rent you pay for your room on earth”. The quote first appears in notes, minutes of meetings and newsletters of Toc H, an International Charity, founded by the Church of England Rev. Phillip B ‘Tubby’ Clayton following World War 1. Toc H was a service organization that grew during the two World Wars and on founding principles of Service, Fellowship, Fairmindedness (civility and dialogue), and through action bearing silent Witness to scriptures and the Life of Jesus.
