Some time after winning their money, lottery winners weren’t all that much happier than people who hadn’t won — and accident victims weren’t anywhere as unhappy as the researchers had assumed.

Shouldn’t lottery winners be ecstatic and paralyzed accident victims be miserable? No.

  1. It is because humans have the distinct capacity to get used to anything. Sure, huge windfalls or terrible accidents will push your happiness one way or another. Over time, we get used to money or leglessness as the case may be. You might discover how to win the lottery today, but after a month of lounging poolside, you’ll be back to the same level of happiness you essentially started at.

    That doesn’t make winning the lottery any less AWESOME!
